1. Why does my dog respond well on leash but ignores me once off leash?
This is a very common issue and typically means your dog isn’t ready for off-leash freedom yet. Use a long line (e.g., 30 feet) and practice recall in various environments with real-life distractions. Only when your dog consistently responds under all conditions should you remove the leash. Also, many owners mistakenly believe their dog “gets it” too early—true understanding takes repetition and exposure to new scenarios. Lastly, always pre-set your e-collar to the appropriate level beforehand. Searching for the right level in the moment can lead to missed training opportunities.
2. How often should my dog wear the e-collar?
During early training, your dog should wear the collar whenever you’re with them—not just during training sessions. If you put it on only to train and take it off immediately afterward, your dog may start associating the collar with corrections. If worn for extended periods, reposition it regularly to avoid skin irritation. Always remove the collar when your dog is home alone or sleeping at night.
3. What if my dog won’t leave my side during training?
This is common with so-called “velcro dogs.” Start by taking a small step back while giving the recall command and applying low-level stimulation. If your dog is right next to you, backing away toward their rear can encourage them to turn and move toward you. Teaching the “place” command first can help create physical distance and set up opportunities to practice recall.
4. What if my dog won’t come to me during the conditioning phase?
That’s a sign your dog hasn’t yet made the connection between the recall command and e-collar stimulation. Keep the leash on during this stage to ensure your dog doesn’t ignore you. Use the leash in conjunction with low-level stimulation to guide your dog toward you, avoiding the need for harsh corrections.
5. Can I teach new commands using the e-collar?
Commands should be taught using motivation and positive reinforcement (e.g., food or toys). The e-collar is a reinforcement tool, not a teaching tool.
6. Can I use the e-collar to stop unwanted behaviors?
Yes, but only after your dog is properly conditioned to the collar. Using the e-collar to punish behavior without prior conditioning can confuse or scare your dog. Once trained, the e-collar is highly effective for addressing issues like barking, chasing, or getting into the trash.
7. Does my dog need to wear the e-collar forever?
Think of the e-collar as a tool for safety and freedom, not as a permanent crutch. While your dog may not need it to obey, wearing it in public off-leash settings provides a reliable backup in case of emergencies. It’s about managing the “what if” moments.
8. What age is appropriate to start e-collar training?
Most dogs are ready around 7–8 months of age. Some can start as early as 5 months if they have good impulse control. While some trainers begin at 12 weeks, we recommend focusing on food and toy-based learning during that early stage.
9. What should I do if I make a mistake during training?
Mistakes happen—don’t stress. If you accidentally use a level that’s too high and your dog yelps, stay calm. Simply lower the level and continue training with positive reinforcement. Consistency and calmness are key.
10. Should I increase the stimulation level if my dog isn’t responding off leash?
No. You should already have the collar set to the proper level for that situation. If your dog isn’t responding, it may not be ready for off-leash training yet. Don’t rely on adjusting levels mid-situation.
11. Does breed or size affect how a dog feels the e-collar?
Not at all. Sensitivity to stimulation varies between individual dogs, not based on breed or size. For example, a large working breed may respond to very low levels, while a small dog might require higher levels. It’s all about the individual dog’s sensitivity.
12. Can I use the e-collar to correct leash reactivity or aggression toward other dogs?
Yes—if your dog is properly conditioned. Once trained, correcting leash reactivity becomes much easier. The key is proper foundational work, not rushing into corrections.
13. Can I use the e-collar to stop barking or whining in the crate or car?
Yes. If the collar is introduced properly, excessive barking or whining can usually be resolved quickly and effectively.
14. Can I use an e-collar if my dog was previously trained on an underground fence?
Absolutely. Just be aware that some dogs initially freeze when they feel stimulation again, expecting a boundary correction. Start away from the home to avoid association with the underground fence. Once they realize nothing bad happens and rewards follow, they typically adjust quickly.
15. My dog seems sad or shut down since starting e-collar training—is that normal?
Mild withdrawal is possible if the dog associates the collar with punishment. Unfortunately, many trainers still use the collar incorrectly—punishing dogs before proper conditioning. Done right, e-collar training should be clear, fair, and minimally stressful. Seek guidance if you suspect misuse.
16. Why do some people use two receivers? Is it for more power?
No. Dual receivers improve contact and help evenly distribute stimulation, especially for dogs with thick coats or large necks. This setup also allows for a looser fit, reducing the risk of skin irritation.
